More than a year has passed since the Taliban took over the reins in Afghanistan. It was expected that after the US’ exit, China would enter Afghanistan in a big way to benefit from the country’s vast mineral deposits that have remained unexploited so far. The Taliban too tried its best to woo China. But investment from China still has not materialised, even as Afghanistan’s economy is collapsing and 19 million people are at risk of acute hunger. Blamegames have also begun. To understand how the China-Afghanistan relations have hit a road bump and why Beijing is reluctant to put its money where its mouth is, TOI spoke to former ambassador Anil Trigunayat.
