The New York Yankees have consistently fallen short of a World Series over the last decade, but on Monday afternoon, they traded for Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino. Both players are coming from the Oakland Athletics, and Montas will join a Yankees rotation that includes Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery, Jameson Taillon, Nestor Cortes, Domingo Germán and Luis Severino. Trivino will be a great addition to the Yankees’ bullpen that already carries the 2nd best ERA in the MLB (2.92). Other MLB teams made noticeable acquisitions on Monday too, so our experts weighed in on whether the addition of Montas and Trivino will improve the Yankees’ likelihood of winning their 28th World Series.

MLB World Series betting odds

The New York Yankees acquired right-handers Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino from the Oakland Athletics on Monday night, and they are tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the shortest price to win the 2022 World Series at +360 odds. The ten teams with the shortest odds at DraftKings Sportsbook to win it all this October are:

  • Los Angeles Dodgers (+360)
  • New York Yankees (+360)
  • Houston Astros (+450)
  • New York Mets (+600)
  • Atlanta Braves (+950)
  • Toronto Blue Jays (+1400)
  • Milwaukee Brewers (+2000)
  • San Diego Padres (+2200)
  • Philadelphia Phillies (+4000)
  • Chicago White Sox (+4000)

Although the Yankees acquired Montas and Trivino, it didn’t change their odds to win the Fall Classic because they had a similar price before the trade occurred. New York and Los Angeles have gone back and forth on who is leading the pack, and it appears sportsbooks aren’t moving much based on New York’s trade with Oakland.

Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino traded from Oakland: What does it mean for the Yankees?

The New York Yankees made another move before the trade deadline on Tuesday, August 2, and acquired right-hander Frankie Montas and right-handed reliever Lou Trivino from the Oakland Athletics. New York gave up three prospects in the deal including left-handers Ken Waldichuk, J.P. Sears and second baseman Cooper Bowman. Waldichuk is the highlight of the deal, but it’s evident that General Manager Brian Cashman believes the Yankees lineup was just a few pieces away from a World Series.

The addition of Montas will immediately lift New York’s rotation as Luis Severino has been on the injured list with a low-grade strain since July 14. Trivino will be more key for the Yanks’ postseason run as they currently own the 2nd best ERA in baseball, but Michael King and Chad Green are both out for the year. Therefore, it’s highly likely Trivino will be an integral part come the postseason, but we aren’t confident he will be the difference maker for New York.

The Yankees’ most glaring problem in the American League is the Houston Astros. New York is just 2-5 against Houston this season, and four of the five losses have been by two or fewer runs, while the fifth loss was by three scores. When the postseason rolls around, the Yankees need to win close ball games, and Houston is much better in this aspect over the past few years. Additionally, the Astros have been missing a big bat in their lineup, but they traded for a slugger in Trey Mancini from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday afternoon. Therefore, we wouldn’t recommend placing any futures on the Yankees based on today’s trade, and we still think the Astros are the team to beat in the American League.
